A.R.Rahman, when that name comes attached with the music album, the expectations are lot more higher than other music directors. The main reason for this is, the person has many things in his magical bag and tries different things all the time…and in this process you cannot expect everything to be a major hit but yes…that’s how you learn…

In Yuva he tried to mix techno with fresh music and the outcome was very good, very fresh music (of course there are several people who did not like it) then the music of Mangal Pandey released, which was low down for everyone including me; the only good track was Title song..Mangal Mangal…and now he is back again with Rang De Basanti

Now at this time also, like always, people very eagerly waiting for the music…the music in promo was really impressive, fresh music and in fact the music also proves to be same, fresh with lot of new experiment with the music…

But Mr. Rahman forgot that people do not like experiments much…but I personally liked the music..Yeah..I won’t call it as great music but it is decent enough….

He has tried lot of variations in music, mixed Arabic stuff (Khalbali) ,traditional punjabi music (Ik Onkar) to Dance / rocking (NOT rock) music mixed with hindi words (Paathshala)…

Let me go one by one with all the tracks…

Track Listing:

1. Ik Onkar
2. Paathshala
3. Khalbali
4. Paathshala - Be A Rebel
5. Lalkaar
6. Rang De Basanti
7. Tu Bin Bataye
8. Khoon Chala
9. Luka Chuppi
10. Roobaroo

First track Ik Onkar, I won’t call it as a song but it is a music clip with verses from a Sikh prayer, the Mool Mantar (Thanks to Raagish for correcting me) traditional punjabi lyrics…2nd one Paathshala, as mentioned earlier this is a dance track which can be played loud in the cars, discos and is kinda fresh and happening track…3rd one Khalbali, this one is a nice song, you will like this if you love stuff in Buddha Bar…Arabic stuff but very well mixed with hindi lyrics….4th one Paathshala - Be A Rebel, this one can be called as english version of Paathshala, not bad…5th one Lalkaar, this one is kind of motivational song sung by Amir Khan…not much to comment on it since there is not much music in it…6th one, Rang De Basanti, classy…one of the best tracks in the album….lot of Bhangra with touch of Dance music in it…damn good lyrics and nice music….7th one Tu Bin Bataye, nice song..slow song but very well sung and good lyrics…8th one Khoon Chala, slow track with good lyrics but it is not the track which you everyone would like to listen to it…but this one seems to be made for some situation in the movie..9th one Luka Chuppi, starts with track of 70s and great guitar, finally you hear the voice which all music lovers wait for…Lata Mangeshkar…and whatever she sings has to be good….and this one too is a good song…slow track with great music and lyrics…but yeah..not for normal people…music lovers will love it…..now the last one, 10th song Roobaroo, this one is a different track and nice music…but again I do not think so everyone would like to listen to it….

So overall the album might not do good for the masses but yes if you are music lover like me…then you will like it for sure :) and one more thing, people might love the music once they see the movie….

  19. I don’t know about you all , but have seen this recent trend among my friends. They like songs only after they see videos. Untill then they will bitch about the same song … but when videos are out they will loved it.

A new trend really. I hadn’t seen this say a year back. They even prefer to buy music cds only after seeing videos. As for me if I really love the album I don’t care about video.

After seeing videos , rang de is going tremendeously getting high scores. Khalabli is a kind different and want some listining skills. Obeously lata’s fans want to listion her as usual . Tu bin bataye, a real touching melody and surely liked by aRR’s fans with fresh tune.Ruburu and other are not being missed by ARR’s fans , bcz rahaman want ot listion them seriously . great rehaman , great. i love you.I bought CD and , now i am listioning , 5 times a day at home and in my pc at office from raaga.

  69. hi all ,
I heard each songs around 20 times and found the most amaging one KHUN CHALA, a real variations of voice ( up and down) with mind hunting beats, no one except ARR could do that. This is a slow and energiging song , and surely if future it will become inspiratinal for all , who will perform this song in different programmes like Indial idol, etc.Every music lover who will listion this one , surely appriceate the kind of music and lyrics. Very tough song to sing .. ARR and the singer did a lot of efforts for that…

Outstanding compilation. “Luka Chuppi” is my favorite and indeed Lata sounds awesome and ofcourse there’s Rehman who is simply nostalgic, especially in the classical piece towards the end of the song…I wonder why Lata didn’t keep up with him throughout the classical piece!! I’d say that is the SONG OF THE YEAR for me.

  85. RANG DE BASANTI: this is a wonderful song. I studied a LOT of music directors, and what music they’ve given, whats their best quality, etc etc… but STILL, AR Rehman stands at the top, FOREVER! yaar kya gaana tha woh! daler mehendi has well proved that he is capable of creating a colorful platform once again! i think he went waaay down with that wierd “slow” song he had sung… i dont really know the name. singing was, no doubt, very, “in the rag and sur”, but… i dont know! it just doesnt suit him. not after his earth shaking singles like tunak tunak tun… and i never really liked him to begin with, so…the battles almost won!!!

  91. rahman’s every album takes some time to grow , because every new tune want repeat listining , as you go forward with other music director , they seems to repeat some past listion tunes , or some folk tunes which digest our mind quickely, can you want to listion DIL DING DONG DING BOLE, NOW..iF YOU GO FOR CHOTI SI AASHA, ONE SURELY WANT TO REPEAT THIS . fOR VISWA VIDHATA AND OTHER , I WOULD LIKE TO APPRICIATE HERE , THESE SONGS ARE NOT MUCH IMPRESSIVE , BCZ Director also play an important role to take out best from music director. Rahaman has some language problem itself towards hindi. so the mixing of tunes with lyrics play also important here. But if you even listion , viswavidhata , and other songs , you can find only the repetetion of tunes of rahman’s itself , not from other music directors music. So rahaman is on top, bcz he want to give us new. and there want some experiment for that also,Some producer also want rahman’s name only for their movies and so they take rahaman’s pre prepared tunes which do not have much significance with the situations of film.

  93. But… I, think Anu Malik had done quiet an efficient job in Aks as compared to RDB ….Rahman could’ve done much more

To be frank, Anu Malik is more of copying the songs….his most of the hits are taken from various songs…the best examples would be the recent hit songs of Murder, Zeher or say Kalyug (Aadat)…

The only difference now I see is, he gives credit to the original artists but earlier he simply used to rip the stuff..and I think on his some new movie he has ripped Raghav’s songs too….

So compared to AR Rahman…Anu Malik won’t be able to stand because the music he makes isn’t original and new everytime…

ppl say Rahman’s music takes time to grow , but why everytime, Taal music didn’t take time to grow, it was an instant hit, same as Dil Se.. it was a hit since it’s very first day..Rangeela, Bombay, Muqabla etc etc were record breaking albums….why VishwaVidhaata, Thakshak, Hindustani, One2ka 4, etc didn’t make an impact …why his music takes time to grow these days only !! i don’t understand the logic….the person whose music used to sell like a hot cakes and used to be an instant hit… now why a listener has to sit for hours to get his music penetrated…looking forward to ure replies

Now this is a very interesting question…
Actually it’s like..when a Music director makes music he keeps some kind of audience in the mind..so that part of audience likes the music instantly but the rest of the people..it takes time for them…

Take example of this OST itself…I personally liked the music very much when I heard it for the firs time but there are many people who need visually appealing videos too…and after watching video they buy the CD or listen to the same song again…so this process takes time..

One more example would be OST of Bluff Master…very well made OST with superb mixes but it is not meant for everyone…the mixes are the ones which everyone doesn’t love..say they song called Buro Buro…I really liked it when I listen to it for the first time but when I gave the same song to my friend..she didnt like it…but when she watched the movie and watched the song..she suddenly started liking it..

So in many songs the videos also makes very important impact on the mind of people…

Now when you asked why VishwaVidhaata, Thakshak, Hindustani, One2ka 4 music didnt do well…actually every music director goes through the process of hits and flops coz they have to try out new things…so in that AR Rahman tried to give touch of other music directors by using typical Indian stuff so that was not AR Rahman and it did not do well…but now he is trying new stuff and which is working for him and people are also liking it….

    Regards,
    Deep

Rahman also fan of such mind blowing short tunes like Nadeem , he accepted , his music is not for just dance and auto / buses , he is the md of masss not for … who are doing a lot labour in day time and want some easy justified tunes..

Rahman is great .. hw is, no doubt..

  121. After reading all the 60 messages i got the point, that are reviews are from the great fans of Rehman. I agree to few and will like to add, like some new fashion in the market, it took time to be popular among the masses. It will be accepted by the fashion geeks but at the same time, masses found it really odd. Same is the case with Rehman’s music. We want him to do what he did in his very best like in Taal, Bombey etc. But how can one say that if an album is not a commercial success its quality is not as good as the one which sells more. Take example for Oscars, that goes to quality not what business has been generated by this movie. So, i think Rang De Bansanty is as good as any other flick of Rehman.
Just to add, I did not understand any other language but Urdu, but love few Tamil tunes of Rehman, and that leads me where, one can almost sence it is not what masses like but quality does matters.
As far as comparison is concern with other directors I think, there is ot point in comparing a great with some one. Greats have there own class and mind it, if any one of you hears the past days Greats like SD, one can feel this too.
Back to Rang De Basanty, it is as fresh as morning breaze and as pure as the newly inborn. Strating with Tu Bin Bataye, I wonders how Rehman avoid his usual temtaion of adding few tricks here and then in Khoon chala, Rubaroo and specialy Luka Chuppi are the best. Few people might disagrees with me about the fact on Khalbali and the main track but I don’t really like both track as they are very contemprary ones unlike the four I mentioned.

In the end, i will recommend you to listen to Water’s sound track from Rehman. One can feel the difference between a great and ….

  127. Great , with the helping hand of sweet lyrics ( prasoon joshi), rahaman did great. The enerzizing voice of daler with the really touchable voice of a mother,…. great poetic expression. Best of luck for movi, may be movi should bring same freshness and excitation like , SARFARoshi ki tammanaa ab hamre dil mai hai , dekhna hai jor kitna bajue katil mai hai,( amir khan’s voice , )

great , rahman and prasoon ……

  133. Hi Jack,
Well the world is more than 66 people :) Basically I said becasue if you ask any guy on the road he will say “what kind of music is it” but if play “Kajra re” song then he wil start singing along with you…so by masses i meant the guys who do not think much about music and they just need dance numbers…

I am a great fan of A R Rahman and I just love the music along with you guys but the people outside this computer…i.e. local public might not like the album that much…

The last rahman album i heard was Mangal pandey. My expectations were damn bloody high.but then except for the title song(mangal mangal) and tumhari adaoon…all were simply boring.but then with RDB in was extremely shokd.i mean the entire album is a block buster.its simply wonderfull.khalbali hain khalbali..was fantastic.luka chuppi is one of my most favourrate melodies rite now..rahman is simply great…wishing him all the best for sivaji and godfather.hope rdb breaks all time music records 1nce again.Go rahman go..

  143. AR Rehman Bangs Man….
Apni Toh Paathshala & Roobaroo Roshani really rocks.
Maybe this might be more beatuiful had Rehman himself sang it. (Remember Vande Mataraam, Dil Se Re, O Hum Dum Suniyo Re & Fanaa)
tell u 1 more thing , the album is for classes & not for the typical masses. These days, Music is marketed very vigrously. I just laugh when some news channels, declare “Kajra Re” as the hittest song of the decade. Well, when we have this kind of mentality, I don’t wonder if people don’t appreciate RDB.

But, right now i am looking for one of his less known albums i.e. Fire. I am unable to locate in my local market. Does anyone of you can tell me if i can stream it or download that?

  149. I would be a jerk to say RDB’s music album sucks……….
So I will not be a jerk cos RDB rocks.
This is the first time that I have heard an album that has
so much variety in its songs. There is a bhajan to start with,
    followed by Bhangda,Arabic, Indian Classical,Rock,Melody
and Indie-pop all incorporated into one album.
This album kinda gives u a flavour of world music,
ARR strikes another homerun with this album

  157. I told Deep to listent the album and write some comments what he thinks about the album but still nothing…

Now, for right now let me do this.

There are number of instrumetals and all conveys the human pain, hope and joy in really good manner. “Ladoo Dreams” (Excellent Shehnai in Khamaj Thhat shows joy one (to be get married ones) can feel in every note of it) , “Carriage”, “Train”, “Funeral”, “Across the river” and others reviels the pain, helplessness and a lots of hope.

“Fatty” comes out like the sun and shatters the nights away.

“Kallu” and “Chuhiya Express” are the ones, they starts of with a desire and ends up on jouyes node.

“House of widows”, you must check this. A track full of depth and lots of sayings.

Till now one can feel the difference of what is commercial and what should be called a soulfull different music.

Now, the songs, again if you are looking for some masalla or regular number this is not for you.

Frist “Chanan”, my personal favourite. An extreamly hatke sort of track. One must notice the use of Sexophone with very few other instruments. Beautiful rendering by Sukhwinder and Sadhna.

Then comes the first love song of the album, “Naina Neer”. Smoooth, Classssy. I dont anything else.

First joyous track, don’t know much about what is meant by “Sham Rang” but again an extreamly differnet and will grow on you as soon as you listen.

In the end, this albums needs a proper listening. Not for those who likes to dance to the tunes of Rehman. Album won’t take time to grow but at the same time very different indeed.

Classical is the base of this album.

    Good work done by Rehman.

If any one wants the linke, check out the replies, you will find that… :D
