The Indian judicial system was planned and designed by the British, who did it according to needs of that time. In present day, its obsolete. In Britain laws have been amended to expedite justice...but in India we are still following ancient laws practised by the invaders some 200 years ago. It suits the politicians fine, because they can hide their corruptive practices behind the slow moving wheels of law.

Deep, introduction of computers in the system means the people handling it need to be efficient. And if I have learnt one thing in India, it is "never expect efficiency from a govt employee". It feels like that they're scared, that if they show some efficiency people might stop respecting them :-)

Hey, you are very CORRECT. Our judicial system is horrible. Justice delayed is justice denied. I have seen more than one men in my life who never got justice as they did not have enough money to further carry on the case. The opponent party greased the palms of the judiciary system so that the dates of the case were always given on a much later date, so as to delay the process. And if he at all wins, then the opponent goes to the higher court but the wronged man does not have so much money to carry on the legal battle. In most cases, one who has the money has the law with him.

Our judicial system really needs a complete overhaul.

"[...]Also, in a repressive society like ours, constant exposure to scantily clad buxom beauties thrusting their assets in your face from tv, magazines, newspapers, billboards might be a bit too much for the libido of the male population[....]" --- I completely agree with this. Portrayal of the female body as a commodity lowers the respect for women among male.

And this Dhananjay Chatterjee, a wretched swine.... when he was hanged there was a hue and cry in some part of the media that he should not be hanged on 'humanitarian grounds' having already served jailterm of 14 years. Humanitarian grounds my foot. He should have been given some sorta medieval punishment.

The legal system needs massive overhauling…its too ancient and slow moving!

This is what exactly I meant...there is a need for the change...things are going on as if we are in 1970 where everything needs to be on paper...and computer is big question mark for people...

Politicians are playing with the law as if some kid is playing with the toys..

No Ashish, I don't agree that the stressful life of city drives people to commit henious crimes like rape!!! There's more to it!! As Deep mentioned that judicial verdict takes so long, some people just take advantage of that!

Also, in a repressive society like ours, constant exposure to scantily clad buxom beauties thrusting their assets in your face from tv, magazines, newspapers, billboards might be a bit too much for the libido of the male population :-) Unfortunately the defenseless pays the price! And thanks to our ancient judicial system, these people can actually roam around scot free because it might take more than a decade for the court to actually come to any decision. By then either the victim has moved on in life or killed herself!!

How many times have we heard of rapists being given life sentences or death penalties? In my knowledge only one. Dhananjay Chatterjee was given death sentence...he raped and murdered a 13 year old girl. Even that case took almost 16 years to be resolved!!! Imagine...16 years!!! The legal system needs massive overhauling...its too ancient and slow moving!

This comment actually became slightly longer than I had intended it to be :-)
