Thinking of using Indian Payment Gateways for your online service? Don’t go for them, they are a big joke. Here is info about some of the payment gateways.
CCAvenue: They are considered to be the best providers in India. (There is no competition in the market) They provide online order processing via Net Banking as well as by credit card. They charge Rs. 7500 as setup fees, 7% transaction fees for Credit Card Processing and 4% transaction fees for net banking. They also charge Rs. 1200 per year as Annual Software Maintenance Cost. (lol just another way to get yearly fees) They have other plan which costs Rs. 25,000 as setup fees, 5% transaction fees for Credit Card processing and 4% for net banking. The annual fees they charge is Rs. 2400 as Software Maintenance Cost.
But note that, it is not so easy to get account with them if you are running a web development firm. My personal experience was very bad with them. I felt as if I am begging for an account.
I applied for a basic account (Rs. 7500 one). Within 4-5 days I got email saying my account got rejected because I am running a web development firm and it is owned by a single person. This one was one of the worst excuse that anyone could give. But after requesting them couple of times, they approved only net banking facility on my account. I was left without credit card processing which was my primary concern for applying the account.
Few days back I decided to ask them again to activate the credit card processing. I sent them an email and talked to their person in legal department over the phone. They took more than a week to decide and finally today she told me that if I want credit card processing on my account I will have to deposit Rs. 30,000. And they repeated the same reason about having a single ownership web development firm. They also told me that, they are asking for this amount as security deposit for chargebacks.
So in short, they are giving silly reasons despite of me signing their legal documents which says they have right to sue me if I don’t pay them chargeback money.
I am currently using 2checkout.com, they are 10 times bigger than CCAvenue and they activated my account within 1 hour after the signup. The only problem I have with them is, payment delay. It takes approximately 20 days to get the payment.
But I think applying for CCAvenue is just waste of money if you are running a proprietorship web development / hosting firm.
Transecute: This is another payment gateway service from India. (I think it is service of Directi) But like CCAvenue, they are also useless. They charge Rs. 30,000 as setup fees and 5% transaction fees. But one good part is, they do not charge any annual fees.
ABCPayments: This service is by IndiaMart, InterMesh. Their rates are almost same compared to CCAvenue. Rs. 7,000 setup fees, Rs. 2,000 per year as annual rent and 7% transaction fees. The same plan is available for Rs. 10,000 one time and no yearly fees. The other plans are Rs. 10,000 and Rs, 16,000 with annual rent as Rs. 4,000 and Rs. 6,000, transaction fees %6 and %5 respectively. They also offer net banking but it is limited to few major banks only. As of October 2009, ABC Payment has shut down their service.
Payseal ICICI: They have not provided any rate related information on their site. As far as I know, they charge Rs. 25,000 as setup fees and 5% as transaction fees. (I have emailed them for exact rates) For integration with this payment gateway, you need Tomcat installed on your server. (Or any application which can run JSP pages)
PayGateIndia: The rates mentioned on their site range from 0 setup fees to Rs. 8,000 setup fees. Their economy package costs Rs. 0 as setup fees but 8% as transaction fees and Rs. 750 per year as annual cost. Their rates are very cheap compared to other payment gateway service providers but I am not sure about credibility of this payment gateway. They seem to be reseller of ICICI Payseal. (I have emailed ICICI to confirm their validity)
Eazy2Pay: Again, like ICICI, these guys too do not have rates mentioned on their site. But after exchanging few emails, I got the details. It starts with Rs. 10,000 setup fees and 5% transaction fees. Fees is one time fees and no annual charges. Their best plan is Rs. 25,000 setup fees and 3.5% transaction fees. They have few big companies in their client list. So it holds some credibility in its bag.
Update – June 30, 2007:
Cashwala or EBS - This one is by UTI Bank. Their pricing seems to be pretty high, Rs. 11,000 one time charge, 6% transaction rate and Rs. 6000 every year as Maintenance Charge. Check more plans here
But to cut everything in short, compared to international payment gateways these guys are way too costly. Currently only few players are in market so they are charging whatever they want but once Google comes into play (I think they are currently setting up Checkout service in India, it might take longer time too), their rates are going to reduce a lot.
Currently PayPal and 2checkout are good payment gateway providers and their transaction and setup fees are also very reasonable. But the only thing they lack is, time to deposit the funds in our accounts. It takes approximately 15-20 days.
Update: Rejoice!!!! Paypal has introduced direct funds transfer to your Indian Bank Account.. The best part is, they do not charge any fees for funds more than
Rs. 7,000 (otherwise it is Rs. 50). The whole process takes 5-7 days. Thanks Venkat for the heads up.
I hope Google Checkout starts in India soon.
futurebazar uses ccavenue
Hey I am new to this field and I found this blog very interesting. I am looking for a payment gateway to sell jewelery product online.
I was planning to start with ABC Payment, but one of my friend told me that ABC Payment got shut down and CCAvenue took over all the merchants of ABC Payment.
Just wanted to confirm whether they are functional or they closed down their business.
While exploring the payment option for my website, I spoke to one of the CCAvenue executive and came to know that ABC Payment got shut down and taken over by CCAvenue.
Even i saw banner of CCAvenue on http://www.abcpayments.com/. It seems that ABC Payment is now referring CCAvenue to their customers.
Guys.. if you guys need account with CCAvenue or EBS, do let me know, I am reseller at both the places and can provide the same at good rate.
Cheers,
Deep

Hi Rahul,
Nothing personal, but there are two BIG barriers before you can start a “payment gateway”.
1) You need a filthy rich financer willing to spare a few lakhs for your project.
And
2) Generally ‘rich’ people are very cautious and biased while sponsoring project related to the web or payments on the web.
If you can solve these 2 problems, there is a 3rd one! You need a team that is experienced in network security, pci compliance, you need to immediately start paying them fat salaries, and above all, you need good rapport and standing with the credit card authorities, namely visa/mcard/amex, etc.
If you can work around these problems, and are willing to work for more than 3-5 years to just break-even, only should you seriously think of this venture…

ABCpayments.com
Nice info there. Indian gateways are too costly and dont provide good support also. Paypal is the best. Just waiting for Google Checkout, it will give them a tough competition.
Wow. This was a very useful article and even more useful discussion. Kudos, everyone!
However, I did not see any talk about recurring billing. We plan to sell online subscriptions to apps and communities and it seems none of the indian gateways provide a solution for this.
Does Paypal (or any other PG) support billing through API? In that case, we could collect the credit card details on our website and manage all the subscription, upgrade and expiry ourselves. Is this possible?
I don’t think Paypal Website Payments Pro is offered in India.
I’ll really appreciate any help or pointers on this.
cheers
I don’t think any Indian payment gateway currently offers subscription based processing.
You will have to look at some international processor.

Hi ,
Please advise!
Is authorize.net accepting indian merchat accounts!
Secondly ccavenue is taking very heavy 7% cut out rate for economy account.
Is there a better service provider with less rates and better services.
Hi cma,
Let me make things clear to you.
“Authorize.net” will accept any “merchant” from anywhere in the world.
BUT, no Indian bank will offer you a full scale merchant account for use with such gateways.
So simple speaking, NO, authorize.net will not WORK for us Indian merchants.
The best alternative to ccavenue is ebs.in, namely e-billing solutions, they are becoming very popular these days and they let you accept Visa and Mastercard + Net Banking.
Their rates vary as per the initial deposit, but the lowest they can offer you is 3.25% cut out rate.
More alternatives are the newly launched timesformoney.com (but their interface is very very amateur), hdfc payment gateway, icici payseal gateway.

Amod

Try Out Moneybooker.
Hdfc and icici payseal only provide visa and there respective net banking.
EBS does have good support and are adding more net banking options..but i hvnt used EBS.
If you are using joomla & virtuemart for your shopping portal then you can go for moneybooker as they just charge 2.9% per transaction.
contact me @ kaushikndm@gmail.com for more information.
Hi,
Recently came to know that there is a option of
Authorize.net ressellers.
Will the authorize.net resellers like cre loaded.com
make it easier for indian merchants to take services of
authorize.net.
Hi cma,
I would like to inform you that ccavenue also offers lower rates that is 3% under their privilege plan. I am a ccavenue user and i am using the same plan. I will recommend you to go for ccavenue as they are offering more number of payment options and secondly they also provide better service and support.

Transecute is shutting down the shop- Not sure they are going to repay the deposits. I see a good leagal battle with merchants and Transecute.
–this is the message from Transecute –
Dear Merchant,
The purpose of this email is to inform you that we are officially discontinuing the payment gateway services of Transecute by February 28th, 2010. Recent changes in guidelines for third-party payment processors have compelled us to take this decision. This mail contains important information about the impact of this closure upon your Transecute merchant account.
1. The payment gateway services of Transecute will officially be stopped for your account on February 28th, 2010.
2. Post this date, your customers will not be able to transact on your website or through other means using your merchant account. To continue receiving online payments, you will need to integrate the services of another provider.
3. The balance as on February 28th, 2010 will be remitted on August 31st, 2010.
4. You need to send us a letter on your company letterhead where you agree to clear any negative balance in your account which may arise as a result of a subsequent Retrieval Request/Charge back/Refund of transactions done through your account.
We’re thankful for your continued patronage through the years, and wish you all the best for the future. Our support team is at your service for any doubts or questions you may have.
Warm regards,
Transecute Team
Lately payapl has been acting up, its stopping all payments to india saying no personal payments are allowed but we have a business account and take payment based on service and even that seems to be stopped. i was researching today about 2CO and seems like they process payments in INR as well which will make our clients more comfortable making the payment. Deep, how has your experience been with 2CO .. any complaints so far except the delayed payment to Indian bank accounts? Did you experience any difficulty in the past few days similar to paypal issue?
Prashant – I had used 2CO long time back.. at that time, it was okay, nothing great.. I stopped using it long time back..
@ Prashant,
The Paypal mess up has just screwed up big time.. I dunno how many are aware off…but CCAvenue does offer payment processing in dollars….you could check with them…

PayPal Halts Personal Payment Transactions From And To India
PayPal isn’t working properly in India. eBay’s electronic payment juggernaut appears to be blocking personal transactions to or from accounts of India-based users. It is reversing personal transactions; transactions involving businesses are still allowed.
A reader checked in with us yesterday to let us know PayPal notified him that the company had stopped allowing personal payments to be sent to or from India (full e-mail can be found below).
This does not appear to be an isolated incident: see here, here and here for more reports, although we gather commercial payment transactions are unaffected at this point.
This is the standard notification e-mail people are receiving in their inbox:
Hello XXXX,
Your payment of xx has been sent back to the sender of the payment.
We reversed this payment because we have stopped allowing personal payments to be sent to or from India.
If this was a payment for a purchase of goods or services, and not a personal payment, then you may contact the buyer and have him or her resend the payment as follows: (a) click the Send Money tab, (b) select “Goods,” and (c) provide a shipping address.
If this payment was a personal payment such as a gift, then we have requested that the sender find another payment method until we restore personal payments to and from India.
We are trying to resolve this issue as quickly as possible and we’re sorry for any inconvenience.
Thank you,
PayPal
Asked for more information, Binary Turf received a meatier but equally vague response from the customer service department:
Dear ,
Thank you for contacting PayPal.
I understand that you want to know why the payment you received for $ USD from is reversed. This payment was sent as Personal. We have stopped allowing Personal Payments to be sent to and from India. We are aware of this issue and I sincerely regret the inconvenience it has caused you. We are trying to resolve this as soon as possible. Below are the details:
Personal Payment – Send Money for India Accounts
· India customers are no longer able to see the option to send a Personal payment on the Send Money page · They can continue to use other payment options, such as eBay checkout.
If this was a payment for a purchase of goods or services, and not a personal payment, then you may contact the buyer and have him or her resend the payment as follows: (a) click the Send Money tab, (b) select ‘Goods’, and (c) provide a shipping address.
If this payment was a personal payment, such as a gift to a friend or family member, then we request that you find another payment method until we restore personal payments to and from India.
Although India customers are unable to send Personal payments, they are still receiving Personal payments from Non India customers.
· In order to stop ALL Personal payments TO and FROM India accounts, we have started reversing Personal payments sent by Non India customers starting today. (the only exception will be in cases where the buyer has included a shipping address – we don’t want to delay any shipment of goods) · Emails will be sent to both sender and recipient to let them know why the money was returned and what options they have to proceed forward. (see attached for examples)
· We are also in the process of implementing a change on the website to automatically stop the payment from processing, rather than waiting to reverse the payment. We will send you additional updates as soon as we have more details.
The Personal payment option on the International Send Money page has been updated and India has been removed from the ‘select a country’ drop down list.
· If the payment was for a purchase of goods or services, and not a personal payment, then the buyer may resend the payment to the seller by following these steps on the PayPal website: (a) click the Send Money tab, (b) select ‘Goods’, and (c) provide a shipping address.
I’ll be glad to hear from you if you need clarification, please email us again and we will try our best to give you immediate answers. Thank you for choosing PayPal for your online payment needs. We appreciate your business.
The wording seems to suggest that this is a temporary decision, but it’s still unclear why the company decided to take such drastic measures with no prior warning on policy changes whatsoever, and why this appears to be occurring in India only.
We’ve contacted PayPal and will update when and if we hear back.
Update: Anuj Nayar, Director, Global Communications at PayPal tells us:
I can confirm that personal payments to and from India have been suspended while we address some questions from our business partners. You can still make commercial payments. We’re trying to resolve the situation as quickly as possible and we’re sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.
Guess we’ll have to wait until the issue is addressed.
Transecute Out!
ABCPayments Out!!
PayPal out!!!
Gosh, whats happening. Guess we, in India are left only with CCAvenue, EBS and the bank gateways. ccAvenue is OK ….rest others are all messed up. We need a world class PG.
We already have CCAvenue for our netbanking payments but wanted a gateway for CC transactions, i guess now we are left with 2CO, they process payment in INR so that is a plus but they have a sign up fees and their transaction charge is double of paypal…
Transecute Out!
ABCPayments Out!!
PayPal out!!!
Does anyone know whats the reason behind all this? Is it some government decision, or just something thats making these economically not feasable?
This seems to be the real story behind paypal’s stopped payments – from the bbc web site
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/8511553.stm
We are Noida based company offering Flower and Cake Delivery Service in India through our website wwww.fngstore.com and were using Paypal for accepting Credit Card payments.
After the Paypal problems in India, we applied for EBS payment gateway recently and it has been all so smooth recently and there staff supportive especially there Mumbai branch people. We have gone live with there system now and would recommend them for all entrepreneurs.
Hi Sania,
Just went through your website http://www.fngstore.com. You just have 4 netbanking options and 1 debit card option through EBS. If this makes you happy, then you see the number of payment options (50 + Netbanking, debit cards, credit card options) that I have on my website http://www.allindiaflorist.com through http://www.ccavenue.com ! Regards, Sunanda.
Dear Sunanda,
Just check the payment interface of EBS and then check your CCavenue interface, the ccavenue looks like it is made in 1970!
The form is so boring and long, it looks like work, not shopping!

Amod Oke

Hi Amodji, ccavenue recently updated their final payment page and I am quite happy with it. I am using ccavenue’s free shopping cart which EBS does not provide. Ultimately the information ccavenue and EBS are taking is actually the same. Not a data field more or less in the check out pages of both the gateways. However, I dont quite understand your argument either. Are you saying that its more important to have a neat jagmag design checkout page that will get you hundreds of orders everyday rather than having 45+ additional payment options wherein millions of potential customers can pay you for your products. SBI has at recent count had 98 million Netbanking customers, who can pay via ccavenue and not EBS. Amodji, we cant compare chalk and cheese. Sincerely, Sunanda.
I think CCAvenue improved the payment interface sometime back, it’s pretty decent from what I understand..
Hi there,
Yes my apologies, the interface looks much better than earlier, but still some issues are still there…
I had used their service in the past, and they have much problems with payments not getting complete with problems like connection timeouts, or blocking the payment if the customer is at a different location than one specified in billing address, etc.
Also, another major thing compared with EBS is that though ebs offers less payment options, the initial non-refundable payment difference between the two is huge.
For 5% tdr, ccavenue charges a whopping Rs. 25000/-
Whereas, for the same tdr, EBS takes Rs. 12000/-
Another thing was that EBS people are very friendly and will recognize you by your name, but at ccavenue, you are just that, their “customer”.
So if they have sorted some of these issues, than sure, one can surely opt for ccavenue…

Amod Oke

Oh and one more thing, EBS “also” offers free shopping cart.
@ Deep,
I agree with you deep…
@ Amod,
CCAvenue also does offer Free shopping cart and also many other Interfaces which EBS doesn’t.
Also, the Online market is now become competitive for doing business, the number of payment options offered to the customer make a lot of difference. For instance, why do you want to stop a customer from down south having a KVB bank account from making the payments..or ask him to get another bank account or may be a credit card if he/she wants to buy your products.
Moreover, i believe Good Stuff doesn’t comes for cheap..
Well Datz my opinion..!!
Paypal and 2checkout are really seem to be better option but Paypal Limitation of Access and closure of account without any giving any concrete reason is really a night mare. It would be better if you before goig for paypal for any major business check these links:www.screw-paypal.com and http://www.paypalsucks.com/
This blog is definitely a eye-opener for me.
It made me think beyond CCAvenue; sure i will check out paypal and checkout.
thanks for all the info.
For me, ccavenue is easily the best payment gateway we have in india today.
I have done a little research i found it is better to Approach the upcoming payment gateway service provides then the old monopolistic approach of the old guys
to name a few i liked the below mentioned service providers
Talent Beat (Whiz Pay).
India pay
Neon Ultra
Transecute
Pay Signit etc
out of which i Found Talent beat a better option as the Features are similar to CC Avenues and a world class service(Since it is a Global Player).Good Customer service and some additional features
EBS recently added the following banks for payment processing -
1. PUNJAB NATIONAL BANK
2. BANK OF INDIA
3. KOTAK MAHINDRA BANK LTD
4. ORIENTAL BANK OF COMMERCE
5. SOUTH INDIAN BANK
6. THE BANK OF RAJASTHAN LIMITED
7. VIJAYA BANK
8. ABN AMRO
9. ALLAHABAD BANK
10. ANDHRA BANK
11. BANK OF BARODA
12. BANK OF PUNJAB
13. BARCLAYS BANK
14. CENTRAL BANK OF INDIA
15. INDUSIND BANK LIMITED
16. STANDARD CHARTERED BANK
17. THE COSMOS CO-OP BANK LIMITED
18. UNITED BANK OF INDIA
i have found that ebs does not have knowledge about how to handle customers they do not know how to talk their clients
ccavenue is good…
this thread has long stories, right from years. My straight Question is, whats is the cheapest and easiest way for small scale web developers, does 2checkout, is okay with Indian debit cards with VISA ?
pls help me in my confusion, thanks in advance
Hi”tsndp”,
If you are a web developer looking for accepting payments through Indian Visa Debit Cards, there are lot of Indian gateway’s, why do you want to go for 2C0?
Options I would suggest:
1) CCavenue: Accepts all major credit/debit cards, plus netbanking from major banks. But also has issues with support.
2) EBS: Accepts Visa/MC/Diners credit cards. Accepts netbanking from 5-7 banks. As per my experience, no issues with support, plus they have a GREAT fraud detection team.
3) Times of Money: By the Times group, accept major cards (confirm pls), net banking, etc. The group is backed by one of the trusted groups (Times). Although the payment interface (where the customer enters his info) is very amateur in design.
4) Paypal! If you are ok with accepting in $
5) 2CO is of course good BUT, they release your money only after the customer has acknowledged that he received your product. So this can be slightly tricky.
6) Alertpay: Similar to paypal, but accepts in multiple currencies! Including INR!
7) Moneybookers: Similar to paypal, safe, established, but the fees are very high.
Note that all international gateways DONT charge initial deposit whereas Indian companies charge non-refundable deposit starting from 6-7k.
BUT, they ARE in India, so you can grab their throats whenever you need!!
Peace,
Amod
Thanks for responding to my request Amod, i have contacted some of indian companies (CC av, Ebs) they are not supporting small and independent like me…
and many legal issues… any simple process ??? sir
