SBI Card – The Worst Card Ever

If someone offers you a free lifetime credit card and if it is SBI, then please please please for god’s sake do not ever accept the offer. I have already made a mistake by applying for the SBI card and I do not want you guys to make the same mistake again.

Here is my story:

I had applied for lifetime free SBI card though Lifestyle departmental stores. I used the card on few occasions and cleared my payment from time to time. At that time I was using SBI’s online facility to check my invoices because I was not getting invoices by post. But After sometime, the online site stopped accepting my username and password and new registration also did not work. After 4-5 months a person from SBI visited my place and asked for the payment. On inquiring, I was told that I have to pay some Rs. 590 as installment and my alleged pending payment was around Rs. 3,000.

After talking to the manager, I got to know that invoices were being sent to wrong address and this way the interest got added with the actual amount. The person apologized for the same and assured me that he will send fresh copy of invoice with correct amount within 2-3 days. But till date I have not received that! After 3-4 months, I started getting invoices with the same incorrect amount.

I called up customer care regarding this issue. I was told to get in touch with GE via email. (feedback.gesbi@ge.com). But instead of getting a proper reply, I received a reply after 20 days stating that they were not able to find my account information in their database.

During this period, I started getting harassing calls from Payment Department (Delhi) daily at around 9.30 AM. The calls did not stop despite explaining them the reason every time. After few days, I spoke to a person named Sumit and he assured me that I will have to pay just the actual pending amount i.e. Rs. 1468 and rest of the charges will be waived off as they were incorrect.

However, to my utter dismay this too did not help. The invoices with incorrect amount did not stop. I tried to explain my ordeal to customer support person again but the representative (Ashish Gupta) was not able to understand the issue and kept on saying that I will have to pay the whole amount.

To make the things worse, I got call from their payment department again, this time the lady was kind of rude. I explained the issue to her but she was just blaming everything on me saying it was my responsibility to pay the amount. But she did not say anything when I asked about their responsibility to send the invoice on time and to the correct address. She again asked me to pay the principal amount (Which I had paid last time), I asked told her to speak to Sumit (the guy who had asked me to principal amount of Rs. 1468 and they will waive off rest of the incorrect charges) but she said, she does not know him as they have 1000s of employees working there. I do not understand, if they have 1000 employees then why can’t they make a simple log of calls made to customers?

I have asked the lady to send me the statements again and I will pay off whatever is the principal amount is. But after that I am not going entertain these guys at all. Let them do whatever they want.

So moral of the story? NEVER EVER GO FOR SBI CARD, ONE OF THE WORST CREDIT CARD COMPANIES. TOTALLY UNPROFESSIONAL COMPANY WITH WORST CUSTOMER SUPPORT.

Update: SBI had sent me legal notice to pay the dues, I also sent them legal reply (My friend, who is also Lawyer sent it on my behalf). The calls stopped suddenly and today I got the statement with all the charges reversed, the total amount payable was 0 (Zero). So finally, I managed to get rid of SBI card :)

    Guys seems there are many with the same kinda story with SBI Cards. I am also stuck with the same situation and the worse is I travel a lot so in this case this ppl are just useless and not even a single response either on mail or landline has come thru or they have responded for my query for paying my dues I am ready to pay for that but this SBI card ppl are not sending any statement and moreover not replying also.

    The link for RBI complain doesnt work. Any more suggestions are welcome.

Sir, I had recived a cheque of Rs. 7200. on 31.05.08 & after that I had made a payment of Rs.7940 on 25.06.08 ie.before due date after that a late payment charge of 350+25.61=375.61 next month I had not recived the statement & I have been fined 397.57 so this is a kind request to reverse all my charges & oblige thanks

  5. sbi must improve its services to compete with private banks…mainly Credit Card division. One cannot understand the SBI card statement. there r lots of txn reversal and other things..in the statement. it is very difficult to understand it

Yes, it is true that SBI Card is the worst of all the other cards, first they start saying that the interest charges are less and once if we take a card then they start charging all types of interest and the interest will be turned into compound interest also once if we don’t pay a single installment. I have taken SBI Card and i have turned one of my payments into EMI’s and they charged me interest for turning the payments to EMI’s also. God only knows what kind of card is it!!!

    What ever the freinds told about the SBI card it is 100% true.I am using several cards Those guys are very very genuine and able to take care of the customers issue. I too accepted Rs.30000/ as loan on persuasion and sympathy ground from SBI CARDS.But before receiving the cheque for the loan I have been informed that I am due for Rs.34000/(Which would be the amount after 2 years) I never used SBI card at all except ACCETING THE LOAN by mistake.But on learning that the SBI card is the worst of all I tried to clear the balance amount and try to come out of the trap. But the lady who trapped me in the business cleverly resigned and gone out of SBI. However I managed to get the address for closing the loan. I have closed the loan after one month itself with 3% pre closure charges as informed by SBI cards. This has been collected by the local SBI card persons. But after that I am receiving statement from the gurgoan head office with all kinds of interest and fine.I harshely replied to the SBI feed back office to stop sending this kind of statement inspite of that I have received a demand notice for Rs 5400/ from an advocate. The story was again repeated to the so called lawer to take up with SBI cards not to torture the genuine customers.He is also silent about my case. I informed him that if this is not settled I may have to publish this in leading news papers,but he is also silent. I fired the local SBI card people also.But no body in SBI could understand and resolve the problem I just wanted to take up with the top most official of the SBI card to set right and bring back the image of SBI cards.Banks are OK but cards are the worst service I have ever come across. No human beings are posted in SBI cards center to hear the voices of human being.If you could kow the address of the top officials including minister level please let me know I just want to coplain and set right these people. Many people in Tamil Nadu are also facing the same problem.

    lOOK AT MY CASE,,,I have already returnd the card with a request to close my account, due to their hidden charges like finance charge and late fee, with no fault of mine. I have paid all dues for what I have purchased with SBI Card. Even after three months They are still aking ( through recovey agents) for for dues which multiplies evrymonth. Among these Some are third rated, AND THREATEN THAT DEFAULTERS WILL BE BLACKLISTED BY THEM, AFTER THAT NO ONE WILL GIVE YOU CREDIT.

  11. The facts written above are absolutely correct. Their service is pathetic. The website http://www.sbicard.com never works. I don’t know when does this website work? Whenever I try to open this for payment, it never works.

    Yes…I totally agree with these guys. This is the worst credit card i have come across in my whole life. The service is pathetic (i am being modest i guess). People at the customer care are just useless bunch of jokers, with absolutely no knowledge of what they are dealing in. They just hand out the list of so-called defaulters to some hooligans (labelled as collection agency) who keep on calling u up and initaite a harassment process. I would never recomment any soul to go for SBI card. It better to have NO card rather than this card.

  15. sbi credit card is being managed by private money lenders. itis shameful to call it credit card .we a traditional batch of money lenders whom we call as goondas this card is robbing innocent customers and squeesing the blood of the customers it has no ethicks it robs the people it has no rational rules to conduct its businessit can convert fraction of an hundred into a few thounds in no time and collet money with its agentsit is acheetits reward points are bogusthey do not pay the points they mention in the monthly bills the incentive given to the card holders is again a trick to cheet the customers no body asked for the points which they gave but when it comes to payment theyfail to houner their own wordis this not cheating the customers

    IT IS REALLY STUPID. SIMPLY THEY ARE DEBITTING THE AMOUNT TO MY S.B.ACCOUNT SINCE I HAVE GIVEN FOR AUTO DEBITTING TO MY S.B. ACCOUNT WITH S.B.M. BUT EVEN THOUGH I HAVE NOT USED THIS STUPID CREDIT CARD FOR ANY PURCHASE OR ANY OTHER PURPOSES. AND MORE OVER, NOBODY IS ANSWERING FOR ANY OF OUR DOUBTS ON THIS ISSUE.IF THIS CONTINUES, I WILL DEFINITLY APPROACH NEWS MEDIA AND INFORM THEM OR EXPLAIN THEM WITH PROOF.SO, BEFORE IT IS BETTER FOR THEM TO TAKE IMMDT ACTION TO CREDIT BACK THE AMOUNT OF DEBITTED TO MY ACCOUNT.

    Fortunately we had a forum to share our grievence. I firmely believe that some strong action/movement is required to stop the atrocities against the innocent customers. I am one of the unlucky guy who had chosen this card now repenting a lot to stop their harassments which also target your family. they start calling yu at 9.30 AM if yu do not answer, next call goes to your home. even after paying all that money lendered + interest. they are raising fresh false statements which God only knows how they reach that amount. Some legal action is strongly needed to curb this goondas and their illicit trade.

    Yes, SBI Card is the worst ever card in India.

    In July 2006, I had deposited a cheque towards payment for this card but unfortunately I had not signed the cheque, well before the due date. Realising this, I deposited another cheque and this payment was cleared very well within 3 days of due date. However, this info was not updated for the SBI card telecalling system and in a week’s time, I was called several times, in a day asking for the payment. I received at least 10 to 15 calls from SBI card even late evening around 8:30 Pm or even later, and everyday they called. I decided to cancel this card immediately and
    after paying all dues and cut the card and deposited and the payment was acknowledged by SBI Cards.
    However, in Nov. 2006, again SBI cards started calling me saying I am owing them more than Rs8000 and they were offering to waive 50% of that. Since then, every month they were calling till Jan 2007, and I told them that they have to close the account, as I had already paid my dues and in fact I had paid in excess of my dues.

    Today, after nearly one and half year, they called me and asked for payment of Rs.8196 and they were again offering to waive 50% of this amount. What nonsense is this? If I owe some money to them, what they should have done is, they should send the card statement, which they did not. And at least they should be able to explain what I have spent this amount for. They don’t have any details. They are not able to provide the card statments. But, now, I understand that they have complained against me to CIBIL.

    What a worst kind of operations this idiotic SBI Cards are doing. And when I was holding the card, there were numerous charges like Rs.8.24 for interest charges, 14.56 towards insurance, which I had never agreed to.

    If someone offers you an SBI Card even if it is lifetime free also, please don’t sign up.

    And I think 90% of you guys who have posted their complaints here are intentional defaulters…….or u guys dont have knowledge about how to use credit card….or u guys are really illetrate…..or u guys are perfectly mad…….who all have time to post ur bad experience here instead of getting ur problem solved……through various options provided by SBI CARDS to contact them…..now according to me the credit cards of all you guys should be cancelled by all the banks…

    SBI Card. I am using their card for the last 11 years
    and over the years they have upgraded my
    cards from classic to the GOLD card now. Now the primary
    and the add on card both are free. Never had
    problem, although sometime by mistake they include
    annual charge, add on card charge but after I
    explain to them they immediately reverse the charges.

    Thanks Deep for giving me such a nice platform to interact with few ignorant people……….who get into trouble just bcoz of their lak of knwledge……I m not happy with only SBI cards but also with ICICI, HDFC & CITI BANK CARDS………..and all of them explain their schedule of charges very well..but u just need to spare 5 minutes out to read that……….

Happy SBI Card Holder – Actually on a serious note.. if you see the problem is not with the defaulters, the problem is how SBI / GE deals with their own customers.. if you look at my case.. it was not about defaulter thing but it was more about the way they handled the case by putting up false charges… they even sent me legal notice about it.. but I slapped the same on their face and they made all the charges as 0.

    So the question is about ethics here.. I am not saying other card companies are good but they are atleast much better than SBI.. I dont know how SBI got the award it is surely not worth it..

  27. And here’s my story. Iam an SBI card holder for more than 8 years. I paid all sort of charges during the first year. Later they waived off my charges every year. In between, I made a request to SBI to change my payment schedule, but they informed that they will note be able to change the pay dates. Last month I found that I have been charged annual fee for my card. By seeing this I spoke to the customer care and they confirmed that they will not be able to reverse the annual fee. So I made a request to close my card. I called up after a week and got a verbal confirmation that my card has been closed, but I still get messages on my mobile and I can still access my account online…

  28. SBI Card people are actually gonda money lenders.last year a lady called me up and asked for a personal loan.when i declined she insisted that i accept as i will be getting a free trip to goa.and the repayment will be low and with less interest.
    the next month a D>D was sent to me for 95 thousand rupees deducting the interest.the e.m.i was 2500/month. i paid 3 e.m.i on the 4th month i got a statement that i am supposed to pay 1,30,000 rs.and min due was 25,000 rs.as i had not made any purchases frm the card.i enquired with them but a person called up and thretened me. i paid 20,000/-.next month i recieved a statement ssaying i have to pay 1,20,000/ and min payment was 20,000/ .what am i supposed to do?

    the sbi has spoiled its name because of the sbi cards,the main reason behind is to harass the customers by charging them unnecessarily and then reverse only on the instance of the customers,in case no objection is filed that unwanted amount goes to the bank.Yes it is the worst card,rather all credit cards are like that.

    now i have been approached by SBI Card fellows to accept the offer of becoming the life member by paying Rs.6500/-. i have not received any paper regarding that, but i have been forced by the persons of sbi throuh telephone every day. i have asked them send papers. but they wanted me to look into the website, but website is not also proving details. This kind of telephonic deal must be dangerous and would imply a lot of hidden items. i am waiting for their offer in paper. but no response. If anybody has any experience by way of getting cheated by telephone please leave ur message, that would be helpful to people like me.

    I am using this card since last 2 and 1/2 year. I have only once the problem with the card but with due respect it was solved by help of the tollfree no help.

    If we are well attentive and use the card very conseously, I dont think any wrong will hapen with U…..

    Use SBI Card and Enjoy responsibly….

  35. Hi Friends, I have just taken up a SBI Card and was about to sign up for online access when I found that the site sbicard.com doesn’t open. Surprisingly if I search on google and directly go to the login page link it opens up. So I guess the issue is with there home page not the whole site but then most people would not try what I tried through google. Well I have also not had a good experience with SBI till now. Here goes the story:
    I applied for a card and inquired after 2 weeks – I was told that I application has been rejected.
    Then a person came for address inquiry after a week of that – I was surprised but then didn’t complain.
    Then I was supposed to get my card within 7 days, I got the courier no and fought with the courier company and SBI for 15 days to get the card delivered. THe card was sent back with a reason “Address not found” inspite of me calling up the Express IT office every day and giving my phone number.
    Anyway SBI was supposed to resend my card but then they again did it with Express IT. I was pissed off as I spent at least 10 calls with them explaining I do not want the card to be sent with Express IT. Anyway I sent the courier back and cancelled the card.
    Then came the melodious call (the first in a month) that my card is being re-dispatched and that it won’t happen again. They did not commit if they would send it with a different courier – I said if you don’t I will not accept. Anyway they did send it with Express IT and my wife accepted it. And so I am here with this card and confused if I should use it or not. After reading all this I also want to call them and ask if this is free or annual charge would be charged.
    For the ones who are happy with the card – please don’t blame all the others blindly. There would be some who are defaulters and any card company won’t care for them and are harsh to them. But then my experience with SBI Card till now has shown that their cust care is not very good. They don’t deliver on their promises. Luckily I have not used the card yet but then I know if I land into an issue sometime I don’t expect a good response from them. I have had cards from ICICI & HSBC and am quite happy with them. The only reason for going with SBI was its reward points. I have to think twice now.

    Violation of RBI guidelines by SBI Cards and Payment Services Ltd.
    Numerous citizens have been victims of fraudulent and unfair parctices by SBI Cards and payment Services Ltd., Gurgaon. A large numbers of common men are being entrapped by SBI Card whereby the customers are being subjected to fraud, intimidation, threats and extortion. Thereafter, finding no other resources, we, the aggrieved SBI Card Holders in Assam have, in our personal capacities, constituted the SBI Credit Card Victims Forum in order to united stand against the unfair, extortionist and usurious practicies prepetuated by SBI Card and Payments Services Pvt. Ltd., Gurgaon, Haryana.
    There has been widespread resentment against the malpractices of SBI Card. A few such news alreday published in Daily news papers in Assam and all ectronic media in Assam. In view of the severe harassment and extortion faced by the citizens and the employees, The Sadou Asom Karmachari Parishad has issued an ultimatum to State Bank of India to stop illegal practices. The All Assam ME Teachers Association has also adopted a resolution in this regard.
    State Bank of India, which so denied any accountability for the malpractices of SBI Card, has been recently forced to admit its responsibility for the first time, for the acts of SBI Card. However, it is shocking that SBI has not displayed the sincerity or sympathy to the common man expected from leading Nationalised Bank, and it has perhaps tacitly concurred to the various violations commited by SBI Card of Reserve Bank of India Circular no: DBOD.FS.BC/6/24.01.011/2008-09 dated July 1, 2008.
    1. Mis-selling by SBI Card agents to allure customers by misleading & wrong information.
    2. Non-transparent, lumpsum and shady billing without giving the annulised interest rate, number of days and calculations.
    3. Sending of unsolicited cards, loans & Insurances policies.
    4 SBI Card’s agent based at Delhi, Gurgaon etc., persistently bother the card holders at odd hours and resort to verbal intimidation and abuse.
    5. Non-usage of stipulated Arial Font & Size 12 in the Most Important Terms & Conditions(MITC).
    6. No explanation of documentary evidence is provided to the card users when the complaints are made.
    7. No Publicity is given through Electronic and Print Media on Grievances Redressal Machinery.
    8.Threat are dragging customers from any where place of India to Delhi for legal action etc.
    It is also notable that the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission(NCDRC), comprising Justices M B Shah, Rajyalakshmi Rao and Anupam Dasgupta, has stated (Case 51 of 2007) that Reserve Bank of India has to powers but has failed to act against banks charging usurious interest in the name of “deregulation”. The Commission has done the job of caping interest rate at 30% and eliminating other”Unfair” trade practices as well. NCDRC’s order states its prima facie view that “charging of interest at rate ranging from 36% to 49% per annum is exorbitant and amounts to exploitation of the borrowers/debtors and is usurious”. It is therefore scandalous the SBI Card charges interest at more than 40% per annum.
    We regret that Reserve Bank of India has not pro-actively excrecised its power to impose penalties under Banking Regulation Act 1949/the Reserve Bank of India Act. 1934 for systematic & large scale violations of its guidelines by SBI Card. We strongly feel that RBI should have taken action suo moto.
    There is a growing perception that SBI Cards and Payment Services Ltd., is an organisation with huge resources designed to take advantage of all procedural and regulatory loopholes, and it has been implementing strategies to first allure and then harass, confuse, intimidate and finally traumatise its customers in order to entrap the helpless common man one by one by using the so far trusted SBI Brand Name & Logo.
    The SBI Credit Card Victims’ Forum, Guwahati has therefore appealed to civil society at large, print & electronic media and like minded organisation to come forward against such fraudulent practices.
    In view of the above, we would be grateful if you may kindly initiate suitable remedial steps so that the common man is no longer exploited in violation of SBI Card.

  38. This is with regard to te SBI cards. All mal fubctions are done by SBI life & GE money(Tat is what they claim.
    Even after paying the one month due they asked me again Rs.78 for short payment & i asked why short payment tey told that i had paid on 3rd jan but the credit came on 7th jan(Mind you it is cash pyment) & hence Rs.78 is for the interest. Also they would levy penalty for that. If we have to pay for them not updating there books….somebody in the middle Life & Ge Money is holding the money & 3 days interestis Rs.78/=…you can imagine for a millions of customers that much of much & would run into several thousand crores swindling of money. It is the biggest fraud & cheating commited by a company like GE & Life on public money.

    They are burglars & rouges of the first order. They really spoil the name of the SBI cards division & teser Life & Ge people should be made accountable for public fraud to several crores of rupees & should be asked death penalty.

    If this is the way they continue soon you can see these people like anothe Sathyam.

    They are eligible to be treated like a dog inspite of the customers owe them money.

  41. Just like others here I also made mistake of taking SBI card yielding to their offers and Corporate offers which they mentioned at the time of submission of my documents. Never for God sake take this card and create a awareness to not take this card.

  42. i am a sufferer of having taken a sbi card five years before and closed
    even though i have a no due letter, for last three years i am getting sms and phone call for non existing due.pl suggest what mail id to send the letter as all phone calls have been poorly handled. for heaven sake
    do not have sbi card unless you want to be a defaulter
    and they will be at your mercy. ask them to call me and face my questions.

  43. I fully agree. I am one of the unfortunate man who had taken SBI card. Now I have surrendered my card. I was getting calls at odd hours for flimshy payment which I did not owe.

    those who says that sbi card is charging wrong intrest plz before use your card take out some time & read the paper which provide with card,wht ever charges sbi card takes it is written over thr & also each & every information is given on the back of your bills,one of u a lady Anupama told they took wrong intrest can u prove that plz provide your card no. i m a sbi cards employ & i will prove that what ever charges is taken from u ppl is write,can u ppl give a singal rupees to anyone without any interest no u cnt then how cn they or any bank wil give u,& the next for all u defaulters that y u ppl takeing money if u works with any organisation,all banks are sending statement to u ppl who is going to pay for that,if u have any problem u need to solve in 1min,bank having call center not for there profit but for u ppl who wil pay for that & the last things that all banks r having collection dept, because these money which bank given to u ppl are yours only,

  46. i fulllly agree , im holding sbi card , they never dispach details on time , no sms on phone when swab the card, i paid the balance amount of 7600, after a month they let me balance of 3:50rs
