Well said ! ocean of sorrows I guess it was a better reference in the medieval period , as of present it can be barrel of cyanide where we never swim but keep drowning slowly.

Centuries of promises have mass ruptured , and we keep hope. Life ends but this search of happiness never ends , we keep convincing ourselves through hope. All of us have our own sorrows and sufferings, some gets quantified some gets rectified, but speaking in general I dont personally promote hope as you never know which one turns out be a false hope. The word hope itself have sharpened the sufferings of the common mass for centuries. We all have hopes , but I dnt know if you have ever visited Africa , and looked into the eyes of a somalian kid with swollen stomach in Appalachia. Its a rational explanation when I feel that they have no hopes atleast not in that kid's lifetime. And I do believe it would be irrational to be skeptic on the word hope but its in the reason of existence of the word itself.
A Greek philosopher once said "ignorance is bliss". That same person later in his life said "truth is the first good to a man that can happen". He contradicted several of his own theories after 30 years. Priest gives hope that if someone dies its god's will. Prophets with countless prophecies giving hope. But this world has faced a mass of tears since ages , just because of false hopes of happiness. People fail to differentiate between "being hopeful" and "being optimist". Happiness can only exists if we make a analytical probability of the result of an action taken in any direction on our personal or professional or natural life. The result can be good or bad. When the result is good , we call it happiness. When the result is bad , we call it sorrow. But there would be no sorrow , if that probability factor is worked upon rationally.

Its just that if we dont hope for good , happiness, prosperity etc. and live in the present , there would be no surprising sorrow tomorrow. Planning the future and dwelling in the future needs to be separated if we want to be happy.

This reminds me of a nursery rhyme my daughters sing whenever they see a boat. :D

Row, row, row your boat gently down the stream;
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, life is but a dream.

Row, row, row your boat gently down the stream;
If you see a crocodile don't forget to scream! Aaahhhh!

It's truly fascinating how children brighten up the days and lives. They bring so much positivity with them that you forget the tensions that life / work brings to you. In the terminology of this post, if we all are in the ocean of sorrow looking forward to the shore of happiness, children are the little islands on the way that cheer you up and encourage you to swim faster :)
