The Kite Runner – A MUST WATCH…

I was supposed to be sleeping at this hour but can’t stop myself from praising this movie. My head is almost spinning… not in so good health but again.. I just can’t stop myself.. coz I want everyone of you to WATCH this amazing piece of work..

The movie is about a boy (Aamir) who grown up in Kabul and moves to US with his father.. (after Russian attack in 1978).. the movie basically goes through many phases..

First one shows his childhood, relationship with his father.. best friend (who was servant at his house) and how few things affects his relationship with his best friend..

2nd phase shows more about father and son relationship..

3rd phase shows how Aamir goes back to his roots, Kabul.. what makes him go there again.. (the place he never wanted to visit again)

The movie also throws great light on Afghanistan way back in 1978 and in 2000.. it shows the freedom, the purity it had.. and way back in 2000, it shows how Talibans made a heaven.. hell..

I was really moved by many scenes of the movie.. not even a single word spoken between two persons but the expressions say it all.. it just shocks you…

The movie was nominated for Oscars and was very well acclaimed by critics. It is basically based on a novel written by Khaled Hosseini.

The actors were simply fantastic.. specially the child actors.. special mention for Ahmad Khan Mahmoodzada (Hassan in the movie) and Khalid Abdalla (Aamir).. Khalid was fantastic in United 93 too.

I would strongly encourage you to watch this movie and post your views in the comments..

Chak De India Movie Review

SHAHRUKH ROCKS!!! SHAHRUKH ROCKS!! and I will say that again from the top of the roof. I guess, this, one single line is enough to give you an idea about the movie. So let me not waste your time much and quickly move on to the stuff…

The story is pretty much straight forward, an Indian ex hockey player (Kabir Khan played by Shahrukh Khan) who decides to coach Indian women’s hockey team for the world cup. But the task is not easy, the 16 girls are from different states and they do not have skills to play on International level. The movie shows, how Kabir Khan, tackles every situation with a different approach and succeeds every time.

Okay, let’s talk about the actors. Well, apart from Shahrukh Khan and few side kick actors, most of the actors were acting for the first time. I would not say those were actors, it was all like as if they are getting trained in real life and people are cheering for them. The introduction scenes were just hilarious. Even the goals in every match made people clap and cheer. After a long time I was getting the feel of Lagaan. But the only difference here was, people were cheering for our national sport, Hockey not Cricket. And that too for the women’s team.

This movie has got the power to change the outlook of people towards Hockey. Apart from the promotions on the TV and everywhere, I think the most beneficial promotion for the movie will be word of mouth publicity.

Let me give one quick example of this, till yesterday evening, I had a negative mind set for this movie and I was just telling everyone that, the movie is all gonna be same stupid story of Shahrukh making a bad team won the world cup (and actually it is about that only) but when one of my very good friend Ashok (he also writes movie reviews - his review) sent me message saying, the movie is 5 on 5. I was like shocked. I called him and he told me, the response was totally unbelievable. So i decided to buy the tickets, the guy at the ticket counter also told me that movie has got very good response. So now, this was the power of word of mouth publicity, it did what promos could not do. I went for the movie and I too SMS’d Ashok saying, it is definitely 5 on 5 material.. So this way movie is surely going to pickup very well.

Okay, I won’t let this review become story about my personal experience.. haha

So, to sum it up… on the acting front, Shahrukh Khan deserves all the clapping, perfectionist, a real coach…amazing actor… then comes, all the 16 girls, with the special mention for characters, Preeti (Segarika Ghatge), Komal (sorry, no idea about the actor’s name) and Bindia Naik (Shilpa Shukla).

Apart from acting, direction by Shimit Amin was superb, he placed everything at the correct place, leaving no room for the mistakes. I don’t remember any scene in the movie which was unnecessarily added. Cinematography was impressive too. (Specially in Australia). The music was kind of OK but couple of the songs were pretty impressive. (The title song and Maula Le Le Meri Jaan).

So in short, I really enjoyed the movie and I rate it Rating: ★★★★½ (I want to give it 5 but not giving purposely.. :) )

The movie might not become a blockbuster but this is surely going to create some ripples in the Indian Hockey scene.

A DEFINITE MUST WATCH.

Rajnigandha (Old) Movie Review

This one was released in 1974, directed by one of my favorite directors, Basu Chatterjee and starring Amol Palekar and Vidya Sinha.

The movie is about Deepa Kapoor (Vidya Sinha) who is in love with Sanjay (Amol Palekar). Deepa leaves for Mumbai for the job and she gets to meet her ex-boyfriend Naveen (Dinesh Thakur) there. Now this makes her life difficult. On one side, she wants to be with Sanjay.. who gave her everything and loves her madly. And on the other side, her past, Naveen for whom she still has got soft corner. She finally makes the decision. But to know more, get the DVD and watch it.

The movie is mainly focusing on the actress, Vidya Sinha than the actors. The whole story roams around her. Director has done very good job showing 2 sides of the Deepa’s mind. On the acting side, Amol Palekar was excellent as usual. (haha, He is one of my favorite actors, after all) I personally liked the scene when Sanjay goes for the movie and incidentally Deepa is also there in the theatre. The whole scene was just too funny and natural. Vidya Sinha suits perfectly for the role of Deepa. Saree clad woman, always looking at her best. All the actors were infact so natural.

The best part of Amol Palekar (or Basu Chatterjee) movies is, they make movies based on real lives of people. There is no one with million dollar property nor anyone with super power to fight all villains. Their movies are simply about people like you and me. And that is what makes their movies evergreen. You always enjoy to watch them anytime.

Okay, to sum it up. The movie is definitely a worth watch.

I would rate this movie: Rating: ★★★½☆

Masoom (Old) Movie Review

I seriously have no words to praise this movie. Just superb !! I really don’t know why our new generation movies does not have this kind of magic. I mean, when you watch these old movies, you feel them, you feel each and every character, you feel the pain, you feel the joy.. but in new movies, it has become rarity.

I will let Channel4.com handle storytelling

DK (Shah) and Indu (Azmi) Malhotra and have a perfect life. They love each other, their work and their children. They have great friends and are much in demand socially. This comes to a dramatic halt when DK receives a telegram from an old school-master who tells him that the woman he had a brief affair with nine years ago has just died leaving their son, Rahul (Jugal Hansraj) in his care. Indu is, needless to say, less than happy about the idea. The family struggles to deal with the situation and its implications.

The most amazing part of the movie is, the expression of the characters. You can feel the pain just by looking into eyes of Rahul. The expression says it all, no words needed. One of the very touching scene would be when  Rahul hurts his hand and runs around in the house shouting for his Mom (who is actually no more), he stops near Indu and realizes that his mother is no more. Indu looks at him in anger and shouts, I am not your Mummy. Weeping Rahul silently hides his hand. Just superb, very touching scene. There are many other touching scenes in the movie where you ask yourself, what is the fault of the child?

Acting by Naseeruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi is just A Grade. Hats off. Jugal Hansraj shines as Rahul. DK and Indu’s daughters were impressive, specially the younger one.

The music by RD Burman is of top class. Everything was just perfect, be it direction (Shekhar Kapur) Dialogues (Gulzar), Music or Acting.

I know I am praising this movie so much but it is certainly worth all the praise. Certainly a must watch.

I would rate it Rating: ★★★★★ No scope of giving anything less than 5.

Chitkar – a very good Gujarati drama

I generally do not post about Gujarati dramas I watch. It is just that till now none of them have made me sit and post about it. This one was kind of different, I won’t say it was 5/5 kind of stuff but it left a very good message in the end.

The drama is about how a doctor cures a patient with mental disorder, gets married to her and how our society makes that person mentally ill again. It tried to show  how society is mainly responsible for this, we generally call the person pagal or mad but we do not ever try to see other side of the coin and that is where we lack and make things worse. The person with mental disorder needs a human touch, feelings rather than keeping her in a locked room and on medication all the time.

The story is based on true life incident which had happened in Gujarat few years back. The drama is pretty old, infact it ran packed houses for 15 years and they discontinued it because it was affecting the lives of the actors. Playing role of mentally challenged person is not that easy I guess. Sujata Mehta in the role of Ratna (Mentally challenged person) was just too impressive. Hats off!!

But now the same drama is back again. I watched it at Birla Matoshree, I think next Sunday it is going to be at Bhavans

It is a must watch for Gujju people.
