Dev D Movie Review

Well.. after No Smoking, I had almost lost the hopes from Anurag Kashyap movies.. Yeah.. yeah.. I know.. there were few who loved No Smoking and loved his style of film making.. but I was not one of them.. I am a common man, who loves to watch movies and enjoy them..

Okay, so coming back to Dev D, The music was what excited me most.. and 2nd one was Abhay Deol, this guy never acts in crap movies.. (Till now, he hasn’t), so I was kind of sure, if Abhay Deol is in it, the movie has to be something good.. I had basic idea about the plot, i.e. based on Devdas..

And yea, it is actually based on Devdas… it is Devdas but a modern version of it, told in different style.. wicked, weird style.. but at the same time, very interesting too.. I have no idea why, Taran Adarsh was expecting this movie to be faithful to the novel, Devdas. He even tried to compare with other old Devdas movies.. I mean, dude.. grow up.. new generation? Not typical love story movie?

Okay, not going to waste much of the time, the story is very simple.. A guy, in love with his childhood friend but could not get married due to misunderstandings or ego or whatever reasons you may call it.. the guy goes deep into drugs, alcohol and prostitutes.. and there comes our Chanda.. but is he in love with Chanda or still in love with his childhood friend Paro? Well.. no prizes for guessing but still, you have to watch the movie for that.. haha

So, what’s the deal with the movie? It’s a crazy movie with super funny dialogues but at the same time, the movie does not become a comedy movie.. it balances out well between comedy, drama, love and masala..

I remember, when I had gone for Sivaji, people started whistling and cheering for Rajnikanth and this was my 2nd experience after that.. here comes Abhay Deol and few guys from behind started whistling.. I have no idea if they were straights or not.. haha but 2nd shock was the claps for those funny dialogues.. and then people started singing Emotional Atyachar (when it was played).. damn, it was crazy.. this same parade continued till the end.. I mean, come on, you get to hear these kind of things in SRK movies or say Akshay Kumar to some extent but, here, the whole scenario is changed.. nor the movie is big budget.. nor it has big stars.. only one kind of well know guy and that’s it.. but it had rocking music and great masala content.. that’s it… and people got what they wanted..

It was time when, people used to stay away from these kind of movies.. but now, the shows are jam packed.. really impressive..

I guess, I should stop praising the movie and concentrate more on the review..

Okay, back to the review now..

First half of the movie was very well done.. the whole Paro – Dev story was superb.. it explored all the characters very well.. the 2nd half started pretty well, 2nd phase of Dev’s character was explored very well, in many scenes you will feel like “&%#% off dude, get back to your life…” liked the Chanda’s character..

But somewhere in the middle of the 2nd half, I felt, things slowed down a bit (after the accident thing – the ones who have watched the movie will be aware about it –), at this stage, I felt, the movie is being dragged unnecessarily.. but it wasn’t like, you start yawing.. but yea, it was slow..

The movie, had many bizarre things.. I have no idea if these kind of things happen in real or not though.. mostly in 2nd half.. the 3 guys coming on the screen all the time, singing songs, dancing, Chanda applying some funny makeup on Dev etc.. it was very weird but good, different..

On the acting front, Abhay Deol rocked.. no words.. he simply rocked.. Mahi Gill as Paro, was good at her part.. Kalki as Chanda was impressive.. but it is Abhay Deol who steals the show…

Amit Trivedi’s music was very impressive.. (had liked his music in Aamir too), few notable songs include, Emotional Atyachar (Rock version too), Paayaliya, Nayan Tarse, Pardesi & Aankh Micholi.

Anurag Kashyap rocked this time, though 2nd half needed some re-work but I really loved his different style of directing the movie.. this time he did not go too far (like he did in No Smoking).

In short, a very good movie.. though it might not be liked by people in single screens but definitely a worth watch.. I would give it Rating: ★★★☆☆. Go book the tickets.. (I am going for it for the 2nd time on Sunday)

Luck by Chance Movie Review

The promos did not impress me much but I was kind of curious to know what could be the story.. the music is still set on repeat on my iPod. So, overall, mixed feelings for the movie.. not sure how it would be even though music was impressive. So, without thinking much, decided to take out sometime and went for the movie.. and I must say, it was worth the time…

Okay, so the story / plot or whatever it’s called.

It’s pretty simple, a guy trying his luck in the movies, a girl trying for 3 years, doing sidekick roles.. hoping to get chance to do a major role. (Her producer friend had promised her) The guy’s luck strikes.. girl remains there.. the guy becomes a changed man.. rest is to watch..

No, it does not have bollywood masala stuff for a change.. so the story is not something what you are currently thinking..

Okay, the review time..

To be frank, I pretty much liked the first half than the 2nd one.. actually, somewhere in the middle of the 2nd part, it started getting boring, it was about to become one of those bollywood movies but the script took a decent turn and did not let it fall into the category of those bollywood movies..

The movie had quite a few “stars” in it.. Hritik Roshan had a larger role compared to others though.. but it was not something which I would remember.. at the same time, Shahrukh Khan had just 2 min role but it was something which everyone will never forget.. this guy makes a difference.. actually he does…. Aamir Khan came in, no voices from the public, same for Hritik and array of other stars… but once Shahrukh Khan came in, I could hear the cheer in the crowd.. don’t know what’s with him.. he makes people go mad… great person & actor…

Okay.. so back to the review..

On the acting front, everyone was perfect.. I really like Rishi Kapoor, he was loud.. but he was good.. infact, pretty good, Juhi Chawla was loud too but she was good at it.. Dimple was decent enough.. Sanjay Kapoor was good, I think this movie can be one of his best movies till now.. (or may be the only best one haha)

Oh damn, I forgot the lead actors.. haha

Farhan Akhtar was pretty good, very promising infact.. perfect.. Konkana Sensharma was good too but she was sad.. (I know, the role demanded it but somehow didn’t click much) The surprise package was Isha Sharvani, I never knew she could act.. she had some very good funny moments in the plate.. and Yea, she looked gorgeous too..

So I guess, all the actors are covered.. direction was pretty good but as mentioned earlier, somewhere in the 2nd half, I found the strings bit loose but doesn’t matter, rest of the movie was handled pretty well..

The music was really good, infact loved all the songs..

So, overall, the movie was very good.. I would rate it Rating: ★★★½☆ It is surely a paisa vasool movie and worth watching in the theatre.

On the box office front, I guess.. good reviews should help it..

Slumdog Millionaire – A MUST WATCH…

The movie isn’t out in India yet… it is expected to release on Jan 23rd… but it is already out on the net… I could not hold myself, so I just got a copy and watched it…

I must say… it is something not to be missed… I am definitely gonna watch it again once it’s out in India…

A very different story… it basically shows how a guy raised in slums wins 2 crores.. but at the same time.. the importance is not given to money.. but it is to the reason why he decided to play and in the end… he gets what he wanted… nah.. it wasn’t about the money :)

Amazing stuff.. great acting by everyone.. must watch.. it is definitely worth 4 stars out of 5.. Rating: ★★★★☆

Ghajini Movie Review

Whenever any Amir Khan movie is up for release, there is lot of hype created around… smart marketing tactics.. be it those SMS forwards or the haircut… no one can beat him here… so.. obviously, there are going to be lot of expectations too from him… he has already started raising the bar after Rang De Basanti and Taare Zameen Par.. so what about this movie? Well… just scroll bit down for that… hehe

The plot of the movie is very simple… a man who has short term memory loss problem, tries to find murderer of his girlfriend..  he does not remember anything, he loses his memory almost in every 15 minutes.. he makes note of everything, takes pictures of the places and persons, so he does not forget them..

The movie is basically Hindi version of Tamil movie with the same name.. and.. Tamil movie was copied from the English movie Memento. So, in short.. the story isn’t original but the way these guys have carried out the movie, is worth the claps..

Aamir Khan was just superb.. his role reminded me of Hulk.. the anger.. amazing stuff.. no one can beat this actor… superb, simply superb..

But it does not mean that the movie too was superb.. actually the story was so strong that they could have made it one of the best movies of Hindi Cinema but few things messed up the party… the police was almost missing in the movie.. also many scenes in the movie raised the questions.. specially the ones belonging to Jia Khan.

So, without confusing much… cutting everything in few words.. the movie was perfectly fine leaving few things apart (mentioned above), Amir Khan was superb.. award winning performance.. Asin did not have much to do but she was good at whatever she did… (though there was some “so sweet” and “so cute” kind of crap in the beginning of the movie)… Jia Khan was bit irritating.. but may be that’s how she acts.. nothing great…rest of the actors did their job nicely…

The music was top notch.. no one can beat A R Rahman… Cinematography was too good, specially the songs.. nice stuff.. Direction too was top notch but execution was kind of weak in some areas…

So, overall… I would rate this movie Rating: ★★★½☆, definitely worth watching.. despite of the flaws… strong story, powerful acting and the music will hold everyone to their seats…

On the box office front.. it should do very good business…

Note: Oh yes.. the movie is pretty much depressing… very depressing… so don’t expect any comedy or happy go lucky stuff from it…

Sau Crore…

Haha no, I am not talking about the amount but talking about the movie…

I have this bad habit of watching TV while working late in the night.. till now, I have came across really funny movies like Don No. 1, Indra – The Tiger and many other dubbed movies but this one crossed all the limits…

Sau Crore.. it is a pure Hindi movie directed by none other than, Dev Anand… crazy movie… I never knew Dev Anand will go so low..

The movie is about murder of Tennis player called Raj… everyone thinks the he was killed by Somnath (Naseeruddin shah) politician cum friend of his wife Kamlesh… (Yea, Kamlesh is name of the girl in this one LOL), so this CBI guy Devanand fights for them, turns to an action hero cum politician..

Okay.. so you might as, what so bad about it? haha.. well.. here we go…

- It was the leading actor’s first and last movie.. he understood that he can never act.. the guy dances like a monkey.. he acts like a wooden piece.. no no.. even wooden piece would look better…

- The girl tries to look like a sex bomb but she fails miserably..

- The leading guy, cries like a baby… leading guy and girl, play with girl’s wig on their first night.. the guy fights with his wife on the first night but in super funny shinning red boxer shorts, jumping on the bed…

- Devanand fights using Nunchaku, but all the wide angle shots are done by his duplicate.. which is clearly visible.. haha

These are just few things.. but when you watch the movie, I am sure that you will have a very good laugh…

It has some funny dialogues like..

Devanand to Police (after returning from temple): Mere maathe pe maa ka tika laga hua hai.. mujhe Somnath se milne do, nahi to aapko shaap lagega  and the policemen allow him to meet Somnath… haha

Another one is from the lead actress where she has lost the memory, she suddenly remembers everything.. (after Devanand’s girlfriend sings a song to remind her old days LOL) and suddenly gets up and says “Main ab theek hu.. mijhe sab yaad aa gaya hai” LOL

There are many more… something like.. one of the villains (Kiran Kumar) remembering about red handkerchief given by baba, he wears it thinking it will give him strength to kill more people.. haha

Or may be… Devanand… singing a song with tape recorder in other hand to attract the people… (catch the video here)

Damn.. the list is endless…

But what makes me wonder is.. this movie has many top actors.. Anupam Kher, Naseeruddin Shah, Vikram Gokhale… I don’t know why in the world they decided to act in this kind of movie…

Anyways, you can catch this movie on 9X…  or may be get it on VCD / DVD.. but I would strongly recommend watching it once.. it’s pure fun…

haha.. it seems my experience with funny movies is never going to end…
