Wake Up Sid Movie Review

Okay.. Okay.. I know, I have been pretty much away from the movie review scene.. kya karu guys.. time ka thoda lafda hai.. the work has taken toll over me.. so I have to give first priority to it and wrap it up ASAP, so I can give more time to the blog..

So, jumping directly to the review.. After a long time, I could smell some fresh air.. a good movie.. fed up of watching crap movies.. I seriously had no idea why in the world these big banners had to make such crap movies.. the best example of it would be, recently released, What’s your Rashee or Dil Bole Hadippa.. other movies like Daddy Cool, Chintuji etc.. were simply a joke.. though Wanted was pretty decent but it was a typical action movie set for certain type of audience.. (this includes me too haha) and it worked.. worked very well.. But there was a need for a family entertainer.. a clean movie with decent songs & story.. a movie which everyone can watch… and I am glad that Wake Up Sid can certainly fit in this category..

The story of the movie is pretty simple and straightforward.. it can be called as a common plot too but hell with it, the story was presented and narrated very well..  the story is about a guy Sid (Ranbir Kapoor), son of a rich businessman (Anupam Kher), who believes in enjoying the life at the fullest.. doesn’t take the life seriously.. but few things change the way of living and change the guy totally..

Now, from this.. it looks like a typical movie like.. spoilt brat kid becoming highly successful businessman.. but there is nothing like that.. yea, the guy starts earning… but the movie isn’t about this topic.. it’s about the guy Sid, who finally wakes up and understands lot of things.. parents, value of money, love etc..

I really liked the freshness of the movie.. the characters were so natural.. just one of us.. no typical dialogues.. no typical situations.. no rona dhona.. the songs were placed very well.. these days every director stuffs songs in the movie just for the sake of it.. (best example would be the movie, What’s your Rashee) but in this case, very  well placed songs…

On the acting front.. Ranbir Kapoor was impressive.. this guy has a great future.. even Konkona Sen Sharma was pretty impressive.. frankly speaking, when I looked at the posters and trailer for the first time, I thought, these two guys are mismatch.. but I was wrong.. very much logical pairing in the movie.. On the side actors front, Anupam Kher and Supriya Pathak were brilliant.. (I really liked the part when there was a major argument between Sid and his parents.. brilliantly shot, shows the emotions and skills of the actors very well). Other actors did their job well.. (Oh yea.. Kashmera Shah was not required at all, such a waste of time she was)

So, overall, the movie was pretty good, intact, I loved it… great music, great acting, perfect direction & editing.. what more do you need from a movie..? I would rate it Rating: ★★★★☆ It’s a must watch..

On the box office front, I think it should do fairly well..

New York Movie Review

It’s been a long long time since I have been to a theatre and watched a Hindi movie.. Yeah, strike was one of the reasons but frankly speaking, the main reason according to me was, there were no movies worth going for.. But finally the wait is over and this movie might just break the chain of flop movies..

As shown in the promos, the movie has a plot roaming around the shadows of 9/11 attacks happened in New York. 3 very good friends (Omar – Neil Nitin Mukesh, Sam – John Abraham & Maya – Katrina Kaif), Sam & Maya get married and Omar loses touch with both of them as he moves to some other place. But suddenly, the FBI detains Omar claiming that he is part of the terror group. But the purpose of detaining him to find solid evidence against his friend Sam, who according to FBI is heading a terror group. FBI forces Omar to befriends with Sam & Maya and stay with them for sometime, so that they can trace activities of Sam. But Omar does not believe that Sam is a terrorist, he goes on a journey to prove that his friend and himself both are innocent.

Overall, I really liked the movie, the story, it was pretty much strong, for a change the movie did not have any unnecessary songs and unwanted scenes.. perfect direction and editing, except for that “kind of” love making scene between Sam & Maya, it could have been snipped easily, it wasn’t required according to me.

What I liked about the movie was, it tries to shows one of the reasons for some of the guys taking the path of terrorism, it shows how FBI deals with innocent people etc.. But at the same time, I did not find ending of the movie proper, something was lacking, raised few questions.

On the acting front, all the actors did their job pretty well, Katrina Kaif is growing movie by movie.. and on the top of it she looked very cute too.. Really liked the character of Sam i.e. John Abraham.. nicely played.. Neil Nitin Mukesh was pretty impressive.. Irfan Khan was pretty decent, he didn’t have anything much to do, he just played what he was asked for.. nothing exceptional.. nothing to show his actual acting skills..

On the music front.. I don’t think anything was original.. the music was good but nothing original.. it sounded like copied partly from his previous movies and the main song (Hai Junoon) from an Indonesian song. Cinematography was pretty good..

So, overall, the movie was very good, I would rate it Rating: ★★★½☆ It is definitely worth a watch.. Go for it..

On the box office front, I think it should do fairly well as there are no good movies around.. and this one was pretty good one too..

Dev D Movie Review

Well.. after No Smoking, I had almost lost the hopes from Anurag Kashyap movies.. Yeah.. yeah.. I know.. there were few who loved No Smoking and loved his style of film making.. but I was not one of them.. I am a common man, who loves to watch movies and enjoy them..

Okay, so coming back to Dev D, The music was what excited me most.. and 2nd one was Abhay Deol, this guy never acts in crap movies.. (Till now, he hasn’t), so I was kind of sure, if Abhay Deol is in it, the movie has to be something good.. I had basic idea about the plot, i.e. based on Devdas..

And yea, it is actually based on Devdas… it is Devdas but a modern version of it, told in different style.. wicked, weird style.. but at the same time, very interesting too.. I have no idea why, Taran Adarsh was expecting this movie to be faithful to the novel, Devdas. He even tried to compare with other old Devdas movies.. I mean, dude.. grow up.. new generation? Not typical love story movie?

Okay, not going to waste much of the time, the story is very simple.. A guy, in love with his childhood friend but could not get married due to misunderstandings or ego or whatever reasons you may call it.. the guy goes deep into drugs, alcohol and prostitutes.. and there comes our Chanda.. but is he in love with Chanda or still in love with his childhood friend Paro? Well.. no prizes for guessing but still, you have to watch the movie for that.. haha

So, what’s the deal with the movie? It’s a crazy movie with super funny dialogues but at the same time, the movie does not become a comedy movie.. it balances out well between comedy, drama, love and masala..

I remember, when I had gone for Sivaji, people started whistling and cheering for Rajnikanth and this was my 2nd experience after that.. here comes Abhay Deol and few guys from behind started whistling.. I have no idea if they were straights or not.. haha but 2nd shock was the claps for those funny dialogues.. and then people started singing Emotional Atyachar (when it was played).. damn, it was crazy.. this same parade continued till the end.. I mean, come on, you get to hear these kind of things in SRK movies or say Akshay Kumar to some extent but, here, the whole scenario is changed.. nor the movie is big budget.. nor it has big stars.. only one kind of well know guy and that’s it.. but it had rocking music and great masala content.. that’s it… and people got what they wanted..

It was time when, people used to stay away from these kind of movies.. but now, the shows are jam packed.. really impressive..

I guess, I should stop praising the movie and concentrate more on the review..

Okay, back to the review now..

First half of the movie was very well done.. the whole Paro – Dev story was superb.. it explored all the characters very well.. the 2nd half started pretty well, 2nd phase of Dev’s character was explored very well, in many scenes you will feel like “&%#% off dude, get back to your life…” liked the Chanda’s character..

But somewhere in the middle of the 2nd half, I felt, things slowed down a bit (after the accident thing – the ones who have watched the movie will be aware about it –), at this stage, I felt, the movie is being dragged unnecessarily.. but it wasn’t like, you start yawing.. but yea, it was slow..

The movie, had many bizarre things.. I have no idea if these kind of things happen in real or not though.. mostly in 2nd half.. the 3 guys coming on the screen all the time, singing songs, dancing, Chanda applying some funny makeup on Dev etc.. it was very weird but good, different..

On the acting front, Abhay Deol rocked.. no words.. he simply rocked.. Mahi Gill as Paro, was good at her part.. Kalki as Chanda was impressive.. but it is Abhay Deol who steals the show…

Amit Trivedi’s music was very impressive.. (had liked his music in Aamir too), few notable songs include, Emotional Atyachar (Rock version too), Paayaliya, Nayan Tarse, Pardesi & Aankh Micholi.

Anurag Kashyap rocked this time, though 2nd half needed some re-work but I really loved his different style of directing the movie.. this time he did not go too far (like he did in No Smoking).

In short, a very good movie.. though it might not be liked by people in single screens but definitely a worth watch.. I would give it Rating: ★★★☆☆. Go book the tickets.. (I am going for it for the 2nd time on Sunday)
